Why is the Mk1C being discontinued?

Why is the Mk1C being discontinued?

Since the introduction of the Mk1C in 2019 the chemistry, software and algorithms that underpin nanopore sequencing have advanced significantly. At the same time, electronics manufacturers such as NVIDIA and Apple have been consistently releasing more powerful compute . This advancement combined with basecalling models becoming better means this more powerful compute is required. During this time the Mk1C hardware has remained roughly the same. As such in 2023 consumer laptops (such as those equipped with Apple Silicon processors) now outperform the integrated compute in the Mk1C. Therefore, we have come to a point where we have made a decision to begin a process of phasing out the Mk1C.
