Optimisation of nanopore sequencing for forensic STR analysis

Nanopore technology has broad appeal in forensic science for its low cost, portability, and ability for rapid analysis. However, nanopore sequencing has not yet been adopted by most forensic laboratories, in part over perceptions of accuracy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the usability of this technology for forensic purposes. This study explores different optimisation strategies that can be applied to forensic samples in order to ensure successful short tandem repeat (STR) genotyping. The results of this study also suggest how nanopore sequencing can be implemented in the forensic science community in the future.
