Dr. Laura Kamenetzky is the research leader of Pathogen Genomics and Bioinformatics group. She currently directs two magister fellows, two doctoral fellows, one post-doctoral fellow, and one research assistant, and has won both national and international grants. Laura is a pioneer in parasite genetic studies in Argentina where she obtained her PhD. During her post-doctoral career, she became a specialist in genomics and in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute published the first tapeworm genome analysis. Now, her group specialize in studying helminth parasites of significance in human and animal health, with a medical and veterinary interest focused on the concept of 'One Health’. Laura’s group obtained the first genome of Echinococcus canadensis, which is highly endemic in South America and Europe, and her work in genomics and bioinformatics contributes to the discovery of relevant biological knowledge about parasitic helminths and several sets of omics data. At UBA-CONICET, Laura’s research group is presenting — for the first time — the sequencing and annotation of the Echinococcus oligarthrus genome. The biotechnological strategies implemented encompass studies of genomes, transcriptomes, and proteomes utilizing cutting-edge technology and specialized bioinformatics analysis. Laura’s research lines include developing new computational algorithms for studying large volumes of x-omic data from parasites. These lines address an area of vacancy in the country. Currently, Laura is the research leader of the long-read sequencing platform at Buenos Aires University Science School.
