DNA sequencing in the classroom

As part of our schools engagement programme, Kim Judge, a DNA sequencing expert from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, visited her old school, Bishop Stopford in Kettering, to give their A-level students a first-hand experience of the latest DNA sequencing technology. The students learnt about the principles of DNA sequencing and had the opportunity to extract DNA. Kim used the Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION to sequence DNA extracted from yoghurt to find out what bacteria were present.
