Detection of hidden antibiotic resistance through real-time genomics

Microbiology_still edit

In complex infection scenarios, rapid and accurate antibiotic resistance profiling could improve clinical outcomes. Here the authors used nanopore sequencing on clinical research samples, to assess whether results would have improved on current clinical workflows. Nanopore sequencing detected a novel resistance gene variant on a low-abundance plasmid, which conventional methods failed to detect, highlighting the ‘transformative potential’ of this method.
