Building sustainable pathogen genomic surveillance across Africa

  • shared.published_on: May 20 2026

Global outbreaks continue to highlight the need for stronger pathogen surveillance systems, particularly in regions where resources and infrastructure vary widely. Since 2020, a continent-wide initiative across African Union member states has expanded genomic surveillance capacity by equipping reference laboratories and training hundreds of public health professionals.

Watch this webinar to:

  • Gain key insights into the challenges of building a robust region-wide pathogen surveillance scheme

  • Understand the importance of metagenomics in detecting outbreaks and guiding the response to them

  • Explore how successful implementation of devices including the MinION, depends on navigating complex human and systemic factors, beyond technology alone
