The frontlines of pathogen genomic surveillance with rapid nanopore sequencing

Online

Offering comprehensive, real-time insights into infectious disease samples, nanopore sequencing delivers immediate access to the critical genomic epidemiology data required for effective control of infectious disease outbreaks.

Listen to these talks to find out how infectious disease experts are using nanopore technology.

Highlights

Monkeypox virus genome sequencing – first draft genome associated with the 2022 multi-country outbreak obtained using shotgun metagenomics in Portugal

In mid-May 2022, multiple cases of monkeypox started to be identified in several non-endemic countries, mainly in the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain. On May 20th, following a shotgun metagenomics approach using MinION, Joana and her team released the first draft genome sequence of the monkeypox virus associated with this recent major outbreak.

Implementation of rapid, direct sequencing for poliovirus surveillance

Swift and accurate characterisation of poliovirus outbreaks is essential. Alex and his team develop sequencing-based methods for the detection of the virus in both stool and sewage, providing additional tools to rapidly identify poliovirus cases and discover silent transmission of the virus in populations. Using portable nanopore sequencing devices, they train labs to facilitate rapid, in-country characterisations of the virus that can guide public health responses.

Practical perspectives on laboratory support during initial activation of a High Consequences Infectious Diseases Unit

Clinical metagenomics applied to swabs, fluid, tissues, and blood, has potential to provide rapid answers for individual patients and clinicians, while also providing data for surveillance to identify new and emerging pathogens of public-health concern. This talk will present progress developing workflows for viral, bacterial, and fungal organisms to support a High Consequences Infectious Unit based in an inner-city hospital serving a diverse and globally connected multi-cultural community.
