Detection and Characterisation of Food Borne Pathogens Along the Food Supply Chain Using Nanopore Sequencing Technology

Molecular techniques are used routinely to detect and characterise food borne pathogens and can be deployed at low cost across diverse and decentralise testing environments. Next generation sequencing technology has been used to develop large numbers of very high-quality reference genomes for food borne pathogens and is a vital tool for epidemiology and source tracking during outbreaks. However, the benefits of genomic insights are limit by cost and the requirement for specialised centralised testing labs. Nanopore sequencing will bring the power of genomics to routine testing along the food supply chain.
