Many students are drawn to subjects with specific careers in mind, often mirroring the visible occupations of the area, for example choosing biology and chemistry with an aspiration to study medicine at university. Undoubtedly this is having a negative impact on the pool of scientists entering research-based careers in the future. We devised a long-term research project that gave students the opportunity to carry out cutting edge genetics research to raise the visibility of science as a career path.
