Project Accessible Genomics: could a volunteer-driven project on an open science platform help bring genomic pathogen surveillance to the global south?

Genomic pathogen surveillance is needed as well as diagnostics to manage epidemics. Currently, only rich countries have access to genomics, yet future outbreaks will most likely originate from the developing world. The lack of genomics in the global south is a global problem. This wasn't possible a few years ago, with the high capital cost of sequencing machines, but due to advancements in low-cost and portable genomics, for example the Oxford Nanopore MinION, this is now possible. Project Accessible Genomics brings together project management and portable genomics expertise to create an open playbook for deploying genomic pathogen surveillance in developing countries.
