In this Knowledge Exchange Dr Aleksey V. Zimin, will talk about the MaSuRCA genome assembly software using MinION long reads.
The presentation will cover:
How MaSuRCA uses MinION long reads to enable cost effective high quality de novo genome assemblies;
The performance of the software on assembly of the NA12878;
Future plans for MaSuRCA and how to access it;
Dr Aleksey V. Zimin has worked in the field of Bioinformatics since 2002, beginning with collaboration with TIGR and Celera Genomics. His research focuses on (i) developing algorithms and software for de novo genome assembly for the latest generation sequencing data and (ii) applying the software to produce de novo assemblies for the most challenging genomes. He leads the development of the MaSuRCA genome assembly package currently capable of working with cutting edge sequencing data produced by Oxford Nanopore MinION instruments and PacBio SMRT. Aleksey maintains a blog dedicated to assembler development and results at http://masurca.blogspot.com. Aleksey has had the leading role in producing assemblies for the most challenging genome projects such as 22 Gb genome of Loblolly pine, 17 Gb bread wheat and 3 Gb Atlantic salmon
