For the analysis of biological molecules
The Oxford Nanopore sensor can be adapted for the analysis of a variety of target analytes. The techniques for adapting nanopores to these analytes are outlined in the pages describing DNA, RNA and protein analysis. All of these techniques are compatible with the miniaturised MinION device, the PromethION instrument or other future devices.
From any organism
Members of the Nanopore Community are using the system to analyse genetic material from a wide range of organisms, including humans, livestock, endangered species, crops/plants/forest, fungi, bacteria, viruses and more.
A range of techniques
DNA sequencing and RNA analysis via cDNA sequencing are currently the main focus of the Nanopore Community. Proof of concept has been shown of direct RNA analysis using nanopores. MinION users have performed DNA resequencing, de novo sequencing, RNA analysis, methylation analysis and more.
Broad areas of interest
Members of the Nanopore Community are using the MinION to answer questions in a variety of areas of research and industry, including in academic research, agriculture, environmental monitoring, healthcare, food, security, forensics and infectious disease.
