Location: San Francisco
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the San Francisco Applications Team as an Applications Scientist. This exciting and challenging role is primarily laboratory-based, and involves working both independently and collaboratively to showcase the use of nanopore technology to investigate a wide range of biological applications.
Reporting to the Genomic Applications Manager, the successful candidate is a Bachelor’s or Master’s level scientist who is excited by the idea of working on a variety of projects to help demonstrate the advantages of nanopore sequencing technology to answer biological questions that cannot be resolved using other methods.
The Applications department has several overarching aims, including defining and developing laboratory tools to enable users to analyse their samples on our devices; developing bioinformatics analysis pipelines and demonstrating how Oxford Nanopore’s technologies can be used to answer a wide range of biological questions.
This role involves working in close collaboration with experts in genomics and transcriptomics outside of the company to generate sequence data on Oxford Nanopore’s devices to help answer biological questions that have previously been intractable.
What We Are Looking For…..
Above all else, we are looking for a positive and enthusiastic candidate with strong problem-solving and organisational skills and a willingness to learn. A general understanding of DNA/RNA structure would be an advantage with laboratory experience, for example a lab-based BSc or MSc project. Training in role-specific molecular biology lab techniques and Oxford Nanopore sequencing will be provided, although familiarity with basic molecular biology methods such as: cell culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR); gel electrophoresis and the ability to perform simple scientific calculations, such as molar concentrations, is desirable but not essential. The successful candidate would have good communication skills to effectively engage with multi-disciplinary groups across the company including those in both R&D and commercial.
The candidate will be educated to BSc/MSc level in a biology, biotechnology, molecular biology or a closely related field.
